The first day of matches for the Allied Esports Odyssey event has concluded. The VALORANT tournament, part of RIOT’s Ignition Series, is heavily stacked with top European competition. So far, G2 Esports and Team Liquid look to be the ones to beat.

GIANTS AND NIP TYING THEIR B03

In the first game of the evening, Giants Gaming met with the Ninjas in Pyjamas. On Bind, the Spanish team was soundly defeated by a much stronger NiP, with Niels “luckeRRR” Jasiek achieving an average combat score of 294 and a +10 kill difference. However, Giants redeemed themselves on Ascent. There, the team’s combined efforts helped to get to a 12-12 tie. In overtime, Giants won both rounds to narrowly steal the victory from the hands of NiP.

G2 SHOWING DOMINANCE

In the second match-up of the day, G2 Esports looked to check out a quick win over the Turkish BBL Esports roster. Having gone through the second qualifier, the team doesn’t have nearly the history and star power of the stacked G2 lineup. Expectedly, Oscar “mixwell” Cañellas and his compatriots tore through their opposition. David “davidp” Prins in particular was the shining star of the match, recording 42 kills over two maps. 13-10 and 13-9 victories on Haven and Ascent, respectively, secured them the top spot in the overall standings.

LIQUID AND FPX STRUGGLING TO CLOSE GAMES

Late in the night, Team Liquid began their clash with FunPlus Phoenix. While FPX certainly made it look competitive on the first map, the last two rounds were absolute domination from the Liquid side. Keeping the bomb sites under firm lockdown, they didn’t give FPX a chance to plant the spike. A narrow 13-11 victory gave Liquid a map advantage. Unfortunately, the fates were exactly reversed for game #2. On FPX’s map pick, Bind, Liquid were one round away from ending the game in their favor. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to close it out, which led into overtime against the Phoenixes. There, they finally broke under the immense pressure. FPX were able to win both overtime rounds, thus tying the match.

So far, G2 Esports look to be the strongest team overall. They’re packing everything – individual talent, great teamwork, but most importanty resilience. They’re not easily spooked by close matches. Instead, the come through in these tense clutch situations. Tomorrow, we will see them testing their strength against FunPlus Phoenix. Liquid are looking to take on Giants and the Ninjas will attempt to farm points versus BBL.
