G2 Esports were expected to fail at Esports World Cup 2024 for one simple reason: they made several important roster changes right before the tournament and had no time to properly prepare for world-class opponents like The MongolZ and Team Spirit.
However, they won their opening match against The MongolZ and then defeated Team Spirit in the quarterfinals of the playoffs stage. Thanks to these victories, they are now just two wins away from winning the trophy.
Of course, nobody believes they can do it when Team Vitality, Natus Vincere, FaZe Clan, and MOUZ are still in the race. But the fact that they managed to beat Spirit says a lot about their strength.
G2 vs. MongolZ
This match was very difficult for both teams, and the scores speak for themselves: 13 – 11 on Ancient and 16 – 13 on Inferno. G2 would not have won without the heroic performance of m0NESY (49 – 32) and NiKo (46 – 34). The newly signed player, MalbsMd, also did a good job: 38 – 30.

In the match against Spirit, G2 picked Mirage and removed Vertigo and Anubis, two maps they haven’t fully mastered. Spirit love both, so banning them was a great idea. But Nuke was left in the pool and Spirit picked it immediately because they have a 100% win rate on it.
Despite this terrifying statistic, G2 nearly defeated them on it. The score was 16 – 14. On the other two maps of the match, Mirage and Ancient, G2’s performance was amazing. They practically won each time in the first half because the score was 3 – 9, 3 – 9.
On both of these maps, the best player on the server was malbsMd, at least in terms of the KD ratio. Donk had a disappointing performance. It’s not clear what the reason was, perhaps he didn’t feel good physically in Riyadh because it’s very hot at this time of the year. But his performance was weak.
Inconsistency is to be expected at his age. Despite his great talent, you cannot excel in every single match without having vast experience.
Predictions
It remains to be seen what G2 can do in the semifinals. Their opponent will be either Vitality or Virtus.pro. Both of these teams played well in recent months and will be hard to defeat. Arguably, VP look a bit weaker but that won’t necessarily stop them from beating Vitality in the quarterfinals.
