G2 Esports, Team Liquid, FunPlus Phoenix and the Ninjas in Pyjamas were all in the running for the trophy. But only one team could eventually set themselves on top. G2 Esports continue their success streak throughout Europe with their victory at Allied Esports Odyssey.

Team Liquid comfortably won their initial engagement with the Ninjas in Pyjamas. With G2 beating FPX down to the lower bracket, NiP had to achieve a win against the Phoenixes in order to stay alive. They were unable to, conceding a 13-4 victory as Andrey “Shao” Kiprsky tore through them. In the Winners’ Match, Liquid were unable to overcome G2 Esports. Óscar “mixwell” Cañellas delivered a stellar performance to see his team through to the Grand Finals. But Liquid had one lifeline left against FPX in this Double Elimination bracket. The winner of the two would make their way to the Grand Finals as well.

Shao did his best to keep FPX in the running. Liquid got off to a good start and finished the half with a narrow 7-5 lead. But as FPX got on the defensive side, they were finally able to convincingly win rounds. Despite the heroics of Adil “ScreaM” Benrlitom, Liquid couldn’t keep themselves alive in the last few rounds. FPX got away with a 13-11 victory.

THE GRAND FINALS

While FunPlus Phoenix managed to narrowly surpass Team Liquid, it probably cost them all of their power. As they arrived in the Grand Finals, they had more or less run out of steam. On Ascent, G2 quickly ran away with the majority of the rounds in the first half. On attack, they tore though the FPX defense courtesy of Ardis “ardiis” Svarenieks, who delivered a fantastic performance on Sova to secure the first map with a 13-5 scoreline. FPX got their chance at revenge on Bind, where they managed to get to a 7-5 lead at half time. But once again, the G2 offense was just too strong. FPX were unable to stop their attacks and G2 quickly strung 6 rounds together. At a 7-11 deficit, the Phoenixes attempted one last comeback. But after two defuse wins for FPX, the G2 players were straight back on their winning track. At 13-9, they eventually won the last map of the Grand Finals, netting them the trophy of Allied Esports Odyssey.

In the Grand Finals, mixwell performed particularly well during the second map. He and ardiis are shaping up to become Europe’s leading players, alongside Travis “L1NK” Mendoza and Adil “ScreaM” Benrlitom. For now, Allied Esports Odyssey will be the last IGNITION Series event for the European region. But as VALORANT keeps adding new tournaments, we will surely see these teams back in action soon.
