After one week of tough matches, G2 Esports managed to do the impossible and won their first trophy of the season.
At an event like this, where there were only three playoffs spots per group and both groups were full of world-class competitors, few people expected G2 to survive the group stage. Even fewer believed in their chances of winning.
But one thing is certain: the entire arena was cheering for them, partly because of Stewie2K, the man who won the Boston Major with Cloud9 back in 2018. If we exclude that epic victory, this win was probably one of the most memorable for an NA team playing on NA soil. This is the story of how G2 did it.

G2 started IEM Dallas in group A and sent Team Falcons to the lower bracket in the first round. In round two, G2’s opponent was Team Vitality, the team they would meet again in the Grand Final. In this particular match, ZywOo and his crew simply destroyed G2. The scores were 6 – 13 on Dust 2 and 5 – 13 on Anubis.
After being sent to the lower bracket, G2 looked doomed. Their next two opponents, MOUZ and Team Liquid, were much stronger on paper and had the advantage of not having to play with a stand-in. But in both cases, G2 found a way to win. The scores were 2 – 1, 2 – 1.
In the playoffs of IEM Dallas, G2 started in the quarterfinals and had to win against another scary opponent: FaZe Clan. But once again, after losing the first half of the first map 7 – 5, G2 started to play incredibly well and won 21 of the next 24 rounds. M0NESY was a monster in this match: 42 – 16, with an ADR of 114.7 and a rating 2.0 of 1.94.
The semifinals forced G2 to compete against the dark horse of this tournament, 9z. This team, ranked just 40th globally before IEM Dallas, had defeated MOUZ, Liquid, and Vitality to win group A. Because of these consistently surprising results, they were viewed as the favorites on paper.
But in front of a passionate crowd who desperately wanted G2 to win, 9z succumbed to pressure. The first half of each map ended 6 – 6. In the second half, G2 played just a bit better both times.
The Grand Final was another thriller for G2. ZywOo had already crushed them once at IEM Dallas, so the expectation was that he would do it again.
The scores were nerve-wrecking until the second half of the third map: 19 – 16 on Inferno, 13 – 16 on Anubis, and 13 – 8 on Nuke. M0NESY ended the match with a score of 83 – 50 and won the MVP of IEM Dallas award.
