G2 and Vitality lose on second day of IEM Rio EU RMRs

Everyone knew that the RMRs for IEM Rio Major would not end without upsets, but nobody expected them to come so early. On the second day of the qualifiers, both G2 Esports and Team Vitality lost against their opponents and are now in a delicate situation. Just one more defeat and they will be one step away from elimination.

It seems that the best-of-one format is starting to affect some of the favorites, who can’t seem to adapt to a situation in which the preparation time is minimal and there’s zero room for error.

EU RMR A results

The team that defeated G2 was Cloud9 and the score was close: 16-13. G2 would have won, but unfortunately for them, both Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen and Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov had a bad day. Usually, they are the ones who get excellent scores. But this time, they finished with negative ones.

The other important results in this tournament on the second competitive day were these:

  • Ninjas in Pyjamas versus Bad News Eagles: 16-7
  • FaZe Clan versus Fnatic: 19-17
  • Astralis versus Eternal Fire: 16-9
  • Sprout versus Team Spirit: 16-12

Astralis are now 1 W – 1 L, same as G2, Spirit, and Fnatic.

FaZe Clan, NiP, Sprout, and Cloud9 are the teams that won their first two matches. In the case of Sprout, it seems that Ismail “refrezh” Ali made an excellent choice when he joined the club after parting ways with Heroic.

EU RMR B results

In the second European RMR, Natus Vincere easily defeated MOUZ (16-11) but other teams, such as Heroic and Vitality, failed to obtain the results they were hoping for.

In the case of Vitality, it’s hard to believe that a team that won a big trophy less than a week ago at ESL Pro League Season 16 got defeated by BIG. But it’s clear that the best-of-one format is not their favorite one. As always, Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut had a great game, but he didn’t receive enough support from his teammates.

This victory puts BIG just one win away from qualifying for the IEM Rio Major. And it could happen on day three because the opponent is ENCE. Meanwhile, Na’Vi will play against Outsiders, and the 1 W – 1 L favorites will have easy matches against the 1 W – 1 L underdogs.

There’s only one exception here: Falcons versus OG. The French are quite strong, so OG will probably have a tough match against them. Based on everything we’ve seen so far, the odds are somewhere around 60/40 in favor of OG.
