Fortnite Proximity Chat Is Coming to Battle Royale and Players Are Bracing for Chaos

Fortnite has never shied away from shaking up its gameplay, and if recent leaks are to be believed, proximity voice chat could be the next major addition. And if that happens, it might not be the only thing players lose their heads over.

Following lengthy periods of speculation, dataminers have recently uncovered some stern indications that Epic Games is currently at work on a move toward porting the feature to Battle Royale. Though proximity voice has been available in Creative mode since last year, this may prove to open up a much broader change in the way players can now communicate, and fight, with one another in games.

The proximity chat feature lets players hear other voices only when they’re physically close to them in the match. It’s something that’s already been in use inside Fortnite Creative since 2024, mainly to support more immersive custom games and story-based maps. Now, with game files being shifted from Creative to Battle Royale, it’s looking likely that the mode’s about to expand.

If this gets added, players could talk to nearby enemies or teammates without needing a party invite. That means moments of random cooperation, last-minute insults before a kill, or just sheer confusion during final zones might soon become part of the normal game flow.

Importantly, the feature seems like it’s going to be optional. So, players who’d rather not deal with background noise or verbal distractions can still keep things quiet. Still, for those choosing to enable it, voice chat might start playing a role in how fights unfold or how players react under pressure.

Community Reaction and What to Expect

So far, players have pretty mixed reactions. Some are excited for the funny or tense moments proximity chat could bring, like unexpected team-ups or trash talk gone wrong. Others are worried about younger players being exposed to toxic behavior, which has always been a tricky issue in open chat systems.

Epic hasn’t officially said when it’ll launch, but the file changes seen in recent updates suggest it could be coming alongside Chapter 6 Season 4. If that happens, the mode could end up changing not just how matches are played, but how they’re remembered.
