The popular game Fortnite was removed from the App Store in 2020 for breaking part of Apple’s rules, which call for third-party apps to use the App Store’s system to sell in-app items. Those who have the game loaded can still play it despite the ban, although doing so is now more difficult.

While much has changed since the original incident, iOS Fortnite players are still forced to play the 2020 version. Unfortunately, things are now expected to get worse after January 30.

Fortnite version for iOS to be even more restricted

Epic Games has announced on Twitter that Fortnite players using version 13.40 of the game will no longer be able to use their V-Bucks. For those unfamiliar, V-Bucks are Fortnite coins players can spend to buy new things within the game. The most recent version of Fortnite is available on the App Store, and Google Play is 13.40.

In other words, people who have Fortnite on their iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android devices can no longer spend their V-Bucks. Another restriction that goes into effect on January 30 is that players of this version of Fortnite must be at least 18 years old.

The creators of the game point out that:

Users are using a version of Epic Online Services, which monitors the game’s parental settings and transactional guidelines.

They are also using an older version of Fortnite, which makes it increasingly difficult to maintain support for this version. In addition, because it is banned from the App Store and Google Play, it can no longer be updated.

Of course, few people now use the Apple App Store and Google Play versions of Fortnite to play the game. The game is still playable, but no new content has ever been added. In addition, players can only find other players with the same outdated version of Fortnite.

Epic CEO hints Fortnite to return to iPhone and iPad

Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, indicated last year that Fortnite could return to iOS in 2023. Since Fortnite is still banned from the App Store, we don’t know precisely how Epic Games will attempt to reintroduce the game to iOS.

But according to speculation, Apple is preparing to approve third-party app stores for iOS. The goal is to dispel future accusations of anti-competitive behavior. So while Sweeney suggested that the game would return to iOS, at this point, we can’t be sure of that. Until that happens, you can use services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia’s GeForce NOW to play Fortnite.
