Anyone can dream of representing their country in any discipline, sports, academics, diplomacy, or whatever. In the case of esports, specifically Overwatch, many players dream of being called up to their national team to play in the Overwatch World Cup.
This does not mean purely active players can play in this wonderful event, although it would be ideal. In the case of the United States team, the list of players that will be part of the lineup has been announced. The surprise is that one of the legends of North American Overwatch, Matthew “super” DeLisi, will return from retirement to play in the tournament.

This announcement has come as a big surprise to the North American Overwatch community, as super announced his retirement in March 2022 to focus on content creation. As a result, the player has more than a year without actively competing in the competitive scene, which could be a double-edged sword for Team USA.
However, there is no denying that super is one of the most talented North American players in OWL history. The player was part of the San Francisco Shock team that won the Overwatch World Cup in the 2019 season, crushing China in the grand final with a 3-0. In addition, super was one of the key pillars of the Shock and its supremacy in the 2020 OWL season.
Will super be a starting player in the Overwatch World Cup?
For now, the player has yet to give any statement or share any message on his social media announcing his return to the scene. However, he has been constantly streaming on his Twitch account.
Whether or not he will be Team USA’s starter for the Overwatch Cup depends solely on what the coaches decide. If the American OWL star still has that spark that made him one of the best in the world, we will most likely see him in every match as the team’s starting Tank. However, if the player is slow or less capable, he may get little playing time.
On the other hand, the Overwatch World Cup is nowhere near starting. However, if we go by historical records, we can speculate that the main tournament will take place at the end of October or, in any case, in early November.
However, the qualifiers in each region will begin in June, and Team USA is drawn into Group A with Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. From there, the top three teams advance to the Overwatch World Cup main event.
Finally, Team USA’s lineup for the upcoming Overwatch World Cup is as follows:
- super (Tank)
- Colin “Coluge” Arai (Tank)
- Isaiah “Hydron” Rodriguez (DPS)
- Nicholas “Speedily” Zou (DPS)
- Kamden “Sugarfree” Hijada (DPS)
- Christian “Ojee” Han (Support)
- Benjamin “UltraViolet” David (Support)
- Luka “Aspire” Rolovic (DPS)
- Rupal “Rupal” Zaman (Support)
- Samuel “s9mm” Santos (DPS)
