After the disastrous Winter Split, it was clear that something had to happen at Fnatic. It was heard from various quarters that toplaner Wunder no longer wanted to play.

Then came the news that big roster changes are imminent in Fnatic’s League of Legends rosterm, and it has now been also confirmed that AD carry Elias “Upset” Lipp will join Team Vitality. Consequently, Fnatic promoted two Academy players to the main squad.

Will these changes be enough to raise Fnatic’s winrate again?

Fnatic roster changes

Besides promoting Oscar “Oscarinin” Jimenez and Henk “Advienne” Reijenga from the Fnatic TQ roster, the organization also signed Tomáš “Nightshare” Kněžínek as the team’s new Head Coach.

Nightshare was the head coach for the Immortals’ LCS team in the summer split of 2022 after leading the organization’s Academy team for 18 months. He is the twin brother of ex-pro player (and current Evil Geniuses coach) Aleš “Freeze” Kněžínek.

Can Fnatic prevent the catastrophe?

Fnatic missed the group stage of the last LEC split after only two wins and seven losses in the Regular Season. Martin “Rekkles” Larsson shared on his recent stream that unfortunately the team had very little time to scrimmage once the roster was finally finalized. The games they played in the scrimms went just as badly as the matches we saw on the LEC stage, Rekkles said.

Who knows if the two new Academy players can solve the team’s problems. But the team doesn’t have many options left either because it’s difficult to find good new players in the middle of the season. The easiest way is actually to get the youngsters into the main roster.

“We’ve already made major changes, the team is already together, pulling together and training to give them as much time as possible before the split begins,” management said.

To learn from mistakes

If Fnatic don’t progress and improve their performance in this split, it will be difficult for the team to qualify for League of Legends worlds. The team then has only the Summer Split to qualify for the LEC Season Finals, either by winning the split or by accumulating Championship Points for a shot at the international tournament.

Fnatic’s official statement reads:

“Going forward, we will take whatever steps necessary, which means learning from our past mistakes, to bring Fnatic back to the performance standards we hold ourselves to, winning the LEC and content ending for the world championship. We can’t promise this will be an easy journey, but we’re confident it will happen.”

Fnatic’s LEC Spring Roster:

  • Oscar “Oscarinin” Jimenez
  • Ivan “Razork” Martin
  • Marek “Humanoid” Brázda
  • Martin “Rekkles” Larsson
  • Henk “Advienne” Reijenga
  • Tomáš “Nightshare” Kněžínek (Headcoach)
