British organization Excel Esports has become the latest to join the VALORANT scene, having signed David “Davidp” Prins as new team captain. The former CS:GO pro started his VALORANT journey with G2 Esports, before being made released by the team shortly before their clash with Dfuse at the VALORANT Champions Tour event.

Davidp was replaced by ex-Fortnite favorite Aleksander “zeek” Zygmunt, having been inactive since the beginning of the VCT: European qualifiers. With the help of Davidp, G2 had initially dominated the European scene, winning five straight tournaments, as well as recording a third-place finish at the First Strike event, before coming unstuck against Team Heretics.

Why G2 Released Davidp

In the absence of the Belgian, G2’s results went downhill, with their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Dfuse in the closed qualifiers meaning that they missed out on a place at the Masters. G2 are now ranked 3rd in the European standings, with the likes of Team Liquid, OG Esports and Fnatic having also failed to qualify for the Masters.

Excel Esports are best known for their League of Legends team, which competes in the European Championship. Meanwhile, the organization also has Fortnite pro Jaden “Wolfiez” Ashman on its books. Despite struggling in the LEC, where they regularly battle it out to avoid last place, Excel have given themselves a good chance of being competitive in VALORANT with the arrival of Davidp.

Who Else Will Join Excel’s VALORANT Lineup?

The new Excel Esports VALORANT team captain has vast experience, having acted as in-game leader for G2 previously. Speaking on his arrival at Excel, the 26-year-old said: “It hasn’t been the best kept secret in Valorant, but I’m excited to announce that I have joined @EXCEL as the Team Captain! I have never been so hungry to compete since First Strike, so I can’t wait to get back on the server and win more titles.”

Davidp has also spoken out about G2’s struggles of late, stating that:

“G2 lacks an in-game leader, that’s all they need. Otherwise they have almost everything to be successful, it’s only a matter of time before they get back to the top. Show them some respect.”

It remains to be seen as to who will join Davidp at Excel, howeve the organization will potentially be able to attract players from teams that failed to make it through to the Masters. There are also a host of other CS:GO pro’s waiting in the wings, with many having already made the switch to VALORANT.
