After a decade of competing in professional tournaments, Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao has decided to retire from competitive Dota 2 at the age of 31.

His career had some great moments but also bitter disappointments and a lot of questionable decisions. Among the controversial Dota 2 players, EE is probably one of the most famous.

EternaLEnVy’s Dota 2 career highlights

EternaLEnVy officially started his career in 2012, when he joined No Tidehunter and spent exactly five months playing for them. During this time, the team got one notable result — first place at DreamHack Winter 2012 after beating Evil Geniuses in the Grand Final.

EE then left No Tidehunter and joined Kaipi. Here, he stayed for six months and managed to get a few top finishes at smaller tournaments such as The Defense Season 4. The team finished the competition in second place after losing to Natus Vincere.

However, EternaLEnVy was restless and decided to change teams again. This time, the adventure would last even less. But in February 2014, he finally found what he had been looking for since day one — an exceptional organization that had the potential to make him famous.

EternaLEnVy joined Cloud9 and played a year and a half for the North American club. During this time, he got a top-six result at The International 2014, another top-six result at Dota 2 Asia Championships 2015, and two other Grand Final appearances at smaller Dota 2 competitions. The dream was finally real and it was about to become truly epic.

In 2015, right after The International, Clement “Puppey” Ivanov invited EE to join his organization Team Secret. This move would make him a Major champion. In fact, he nearly won two Majors with Secret, but OG ruined his plans at The Frankfurt Major 2015.

Unfortunately for EternaLEnVy, Team Secret finished among the last at The International 2016 and that pretty much ended his contract with the organization.

After this relatively successful season spent in Europe, EternaLEnVy’s career went downhill. He played for more than a dozen different teams from 2016 until his retirement in 2022, but never won anything significant again.

Controversy

EternaLEnVy’s temperament made him tough to play alongside. Not once he allegedly got his teammates kicked from the team, even after the organization he was playing for obtained an excellent result.

He was a political animal and his schemes were a part of the reason why Valve eventually introduced strict rules against kicking players at random times during a season.

The most famous incident was the one involving Khoo “Ohaiyo” Chong Xin, who got kicked by Fnatic while EE was there. This happened in January 2018 and made headlines in the community.
