The NBA 2K League, the premier esports league for the NBA 2K basketball franchise, has announced plans to overhaul the competition.

According to a news release, the NBA and game publisher Take-Two Interactive will reimagine the NBA 2K League into a global digital entertainment business, resulting in a revamped 2K competitive ecosystem and a new digital media brand.

How did this happen?

A report from Dexerto had noted that staff had been laid off as a result of this new revamp, including but not limited to broadcasters, general managers and coaches. No word has been released officially about how many jobs were lost.

However, declining ratings may have been a factor. Dexerto reported a measly 26,000 figures compared to League of Legends’ 6 million peak viewers – a massive low given the NBA’s global reach and influence in traditional sports.

“The league, and 2K as an esport, has been struggling for viewers and engagement since its first season in 2018, and that hasn’t changed much as the years have gone on,” the Dexerto report stated.

The revamp follows the league’s struggles to increase viewing figures throughout 2024. According to esports data platform Esports Charts, the NBA 2K League’s 5v5 season has reached peak viewing figures of 25,950 and 20,958 for its recent main tournaments — The Tipoff and The Turn, respectively.

NBA 2K League restarts in 2025 with influencers, celebs and players

The 2K League’s new competitive structure in 2025 will involve NBA players and celebrities. Exact details about the new season will be revealed in the coming months. This revamp follows the league’s struggle to increase viewing figures throughout 2024. Esports data platform Esports Charts reported peak viewing figures of 25,950 and 20,958 for its recent main tournaments, The Tipoff and The Turn, respectively.

The layoffs were announced during a meeting on July 2nd, 2024, with Andrew Perlmutter, the NBA 2K League’s first-ever CEO, appointed in September 2023.

The layoffs were announced during a meeting on July 2nd, 2024, with Andrew Perlmutter, the NBA 2K League’s first-ever CEO, appointed in September 2023.

However, in the news release, three key thrusts were show: live events, a new digital media brand, and the 2K league as well, this time, featuring NBA players and celebrities in a bid to boost moribund viewership figures.

Visions for the league’s future

Following the meeting, former NBA 2K League commentator Jamie ‘Dirk’ Diaz Ruiz claimed on Twitch that the league will go on a long hiatus to prepare for its return in 2025. General Manager and Head Coach of Heat Check Gaming ‘Famous Enough’ stated that Perlmutter “fired everyone in 10 minutes and got off.”

The NBA 2K League’s statement on the overhaul detailed the decision to transform the league: “Driven by a bold new vision, the future business will combine NBA and Take-Two brand assets and seek to engage consumers who live and play where pop culture, gaming and basketball collide.”

Social media has been rife with mixed responses to the move, others saying the league needed a chance to revamp itself, while others call the move out for not closely following the success of other esports.
