Elite League Group Stage Day 5 Results

With only one day left, Elite League’s group stage continues to be an open battle for most of the teams in both groups. HEROIC and Team Spirit will be eliminated in group A, while Blacklist International will be eliminated in group B. At this point, only one of the 16 competitors can be sure of its playoffs spot – Team Falcons (10 W – 4 L).

Or some teams, such as PSG Quest, there are no more matches left to be played. While for others, such as OG, there are two more matches left to be played. The relatively small score difference between most of the teams creates a very volatile situation. And that’s exactly what makes the final competitive day so exciting.

On the fifth day of group A of Elite League, not a single match ended in a draw.

Azure Ray defeated Entity after two games that lasted almost 45 minutes each. The Chinese team picked heroes like Io, Dark Seer, and Weaver against Entity’s much more traditional picks: Batrider, Centaur Warrunner, Terroblade, Luna, and others.

PSG Quest defeated Team Spirit. At this point, it’s no longer a surprise when teams beat Spirit. The surprise is when they lose against them. PSG knew exactly what they wanted to do in this game and they picked the same trio twice: Pangolier, Enchantress, and Gyrocopter. In game 1, they had the audacity to also pick Enigma and Anti-Mage, two very risky heroes.

Entity lost their second match of the day against Team Falcons. This time, they tried to combine Leshrac, a very solid midlaner, with heroes like Morphling and Meepo. Falcons responded with very tanky cores, such as Lifestealer, Underlord, Dragon Knight, Doom, and Timbersaw. These picks allowed them to deal well with Entity’s damage burst.

G2.iG had a rough match against PSG Quest and ended up losing to an Io + Marci combo each time. On paper, their drafts looked solid. But in the heat of battle, their decisions weren’t always the best. In one of the games, they had a 15.000 gold lead at the 45-minute mark. But they lost all of it in the next 12 minutes.

In Group B, three of the four matches ended in a draw. BetBoom Esports stole a point from Aurora after losing game 1. Their Sniper + Luna combo worked well in the second game.

BOOM Esports drew against Team Liquid. Surprisingly, they won game 1 in 45 minutes using Terrorblade. But then they lost game 2 in just 18 minutes to a very aggressive combo: Templar Assassin, Leshrac, Batrider, Omniknight, and Disruptor. Liquid clearly wanted to try a cheese strategy and they succeeded with it.

By the 10-minute mark, their gold advantage was already 3000. Five minutes later, it was 9000. At that point, the game was practically over. For Liquid, this was a much-needed point because group B is full of strong teams that are separated by only a few points before the final day.

Xtreme Gaming defeated Blacklist International. This victory was not hard to predict because Blacklist had played poorly in the first four matches, obtaining just 2 points out of 8. What is interesting is that in both games, Xtreme picked Gyrocopter. Not that long ago, this hero was considered weak by most teams. But now he’s highly contested.

In the 4^th match of the group, Gaimin Gladiators drew against Tundra. In game 1, Tundra’s Techies strategy worked surprisingly well against heroes with a lot of initiation capabilities, such as Axe, Clockwerk, Phoenix, and  Weaver. But in game 2, they tried something similar and got completely crushed. The game was over in under 25 minutes.

Final Day Predictions

On the last day of the group stage of Elite League, we are likely to see OG, Azure Ray, and PSG Quest advancing to the playoffs together with Team Falcons. In group B, the most likely winners are Team Liquid, Tundra Esports, Xtreme Gaming, and Gaimin Gladiators.

In other words, in group A we are likely to see Entity and G2.iG getting eliminated. In group B, Aurora could easily miss the boat because their last match is against Xtreme Gaming.
