What had been a rumor for several weeks is now completely confirmed. Officially, the E3 video game festival has been cancelled after several major companies such as Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, SEGA, and Tencent, among others, got off the boat in recent weeks.

This news, without a doubt, is terrible news for both the organizers of the festival and the fans who were looking forward to attending. Recall that E3 is the world’s largest video game festival or trade show and has been used for developers to announce new titles or news about their video games.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2023 officially cancelled

Through an announcement on its official Twitter account, the festival organizers announced that E3 2023 is cancelled, both in its in-person and digital formats.

After this announcement, fans, publishers, and video game developers should reflect on how they will announce their news in the future. As mentioned, major publishers and developers withdrew from the event in recent weeks, such as:

  • SEGA
  • Tencent
  • Devolver Digital
  • Microsoft
  • Nintendo
  • Ubisoft
  • Sony

According to published information, the organization emailed all its members that the 2023 edition was cancelled. The email stated that E3 continues to be a beloved brand and event, but the 2023 edition was not attractive enough to capture the attention of the big companies. Furthermore, they point out that, due to the lack of interest, it is impossible to hold an event that is up to par with the video game industry.

A big blow to E3

The E3 was one of fans’ most awaited video game festivals in recent years because developers and video game publishers presented news about their titles. However, this festival has not been held in person since 2019, as in 2020, they had to cancel it due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Undoubtedly, the pandemic was one of the causes of the debacle of the festival in the last two years. Therefore, in 2021, it was held completely in digital format, but in 2022 it was cancelled with the mission to organize a great and magnificent event for this year, 2023.

In September 2022, the ESA and ReedPop announced that E3 2023 would be held on the weekend of June 13-16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. However, due to the lack of “interest” mentioned above, the organizers have decided to cancel the festival for good.

It is not completely clear whether this will be a definitive cancellation or if they are thinking of some plan to carry out the 2024 edition and that this one will awaken the interest of the big brands again.

All expected this cancellation

It is no secret that when most big brands withdrew from the festival, the event’s cancellation was more than expected. Moreover, all the rumors pointed to it in the last few days; finally, we have this disappointing news.

The last one to get off the E3 boat was Ubisoft, which had confirmed its attendance at the festival. However, they then decided they would not attend, which triggered Tencent and SEGA to do the same and join Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, which had made clear their intention not to participate a few weeks ago.
