The Black King Bar (BKB) is one of the strongest items in Dota 2. Its power to block disables and reduce a lot of magic damage often decide team fights. Knowing the time and the way to use it will make the difference between average players and the ones who play on high level.
Core Stats and Ability

BKB cost 4,050 gold, built from Ogre Axe, Mithril Hammer, and a recipe. It gives +10 Strength, +24 Attack Damage, +220 health, and also small health regeneration. While the stats is decent, the true strength come from the active ability, called Avatar.
Avatar give a basic dispel, 60% magic resist, and immunity to most debuffs like stuns, silences or slows. It also prevent pure damage and reflected damage such as from Blade Mail. The duration start at nine seconds and each usage it goes down, until it stay fixed at six seconds. Mana cost is 50 and cooldown is 95 seconds. One important point, the cooldown and duration are tied with the hero itself, so buying a new BKB don’t reset them.
Strategic Usage

The most important with BKB is the timing. If you press too early you waste it, but if too late you maybe disabled before it help. Best is to use once the fight begin or when you see opponents trying to chain control.
BKB is very effective against heroes with much crowd control and also stop the danger of reflected damage from Axe or Blade Mail users. Still, not every spell is blocked. Big ultimates like Enigma Black Hole or Bane Fiend’s Grip, and abilities like Axe Berserker’s Call or Naga Ensnare, go through BKB.
Place in the Meta
Usually BKB is bought mid to late game, since its components not help much with farm speed. But when the enemy draft have too many disables, rushing earlier can be necessary. In professional play it is even seen as first or second item, because even six second immunity is enough to win crucial fights and objectives.
To play BKB well is about judgement. You must know what it cancel, what pierce through, and the correct moment to press. When done right, BKB is not only defense but also the way a hero can take control of fights and push for victory.
