The CoD-Killer is dying. xDefiant, infamously CoD-Killer, rapidly loses numbers of concurrent players.

This highly popular game genre, first-person shooters, certainly has a saturated market. It is evident how competitive the landscape of this genre is. In May 2024, Ubisoft released xDefiant, their free-to-play title that will compete with the popular title, Call of Duty

xDefiant combined elements from Ubisoft game franchises like Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon. This hopes to bring a refreshing take on the popular genre; however, their ambitious goal is now in shambles. Recent reports show a decline in the player count of Ubisoft’s xDefiant. What would happen to them now?

A Strong Start Followed by Rapid Decline

Over a million players indulged in the launch of xDefiant within the first three hours of release. It continuously soared into popularity and even reached an impressive number of eight million players within the first week. This spectacular feat has players and critics praising the polished gunplay and its engaging map design.

The community claimed that perhaps xDefiant is the game that will challenge the dominance of its competitor, the Call of Duty franchise. However, it was a short-lived hype as the game failed to maintain its player base and fell into a decline. The current estimates have been saying that the game currently has 20,000 concurrent players across the platforms. Definitely, a mile away from its millions.

The Pressure Is On

A grim picture lies ahead of Defiant as the decline of players persists. Sources close to Ubisoft San Francisco have been calling a possible end to this game title. The xDefiant development team is facing an immense pressure of increasing the player numbers before their Season 3 launch.

The launch will begin in late December 2024 or early January 2025, which are a few months away from now. With that, it is likely for Ubisoft to cut off the support entirely if xDefiant fails to deliver a significant improvement in numbers.

Beside this, the Ubisoft San Francisco team has faced numerous challenges earlier this year. There has been scrutiny in the investigation of the toxic work culture for its unsuccessful report. The studio also had layoffs that directly affected the xDefiant team and their performance.

The game’s future sits between uncertainty as they have to deliver a difficult task. An unnamed developer warns that a headline of Ubisoft San Francisco layoffs within six months is likely to happen. This just means more job cuts for the studio.

Fierce Competition in the FPS Market

xDefiant’s struggle feigns no difference given the highly competitive nature of the FPS market. Many recent releases struggle to maintain relevance amidst popular franchises. For xDefiant, it is maintaining the player base that serves as a challenge.

In the timeframe of their Season 3 launch, the Call of Duty franchise will release Black Ops 6 in October 2024 to further raise the competition. Additionally, the Marvel Rivals will also launch in early December. With these upcoming game titles, xDefiant will have to double their recovery efforts to compete.

Moreover, it has not been easy, as the summer of 2024 welcomed major developments in the FPS genre. Valorant expanded their gameplay experience to consoles, which might have been a factor in the loss in xDefiant’s number. This just shows how many and wide the available options are to the players. They will have to reignite the attention from the old players and potential newcomers of xDefiant.

What’s Next for xDefiant?

It is definitely not over for xDefiant. There is still a glimmer of hope that shines amidst their gloomy position. With its impending launch on September 24, 2024, Ubisoft will present a new faction, maps, modes, and weapons. It hopes to bring the number of players up into the game.

In next month, it is likely for Ubisoft to host another “XDebrief” to unveil the details of the Season 2 launch. This will be crucial to determining the trajectory of the game, as they will have to pull everything together to create promising content. After all, they’ll be competing against the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Marvel Rivals, who have an established community.

Conclusion

The present situation of xDefiant just shows the challenges of competing in the free-to-play shooter games. Ubisoft failed to keep players interested and engaged from the initial launch, which has caused their current hurdles. Right now, the CoD-Killer may have been a noise brought by hype as they stand nowhere close to the franchise.

The gaming industry is closely monitoring xDefiants steps as it could impact how big game companies handle free-to-play games going forward significantly. Currently attention is all on Ubisoft San Francisco as they strive to maintain their CoD rival amid tough competition and declining player counts.
