The two German teams have completed their first matches in the DreamHack Open Fall playoffs. BIG managed to succeed over G2 Esports and Sprout eliminated GODSENT.

Expectedly, Astralis and North have won their Openers. Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander and company put up a dominant show as their opponents, GODSENT, got a mere 13 rounds on two maps combined. Peter “dupreeh” Rasmussen continues to be a leading figure for his team and achieved a 1.37 rating with 42 Kills in this short match.

Fnatic put up a similar display and managed to stop the North redemption story right in its tracks. Actually, Jonas “Lekr0” Olofsson was the best player for his team, but there was no getting past Maikil “Golden” Selim. The Swede unexpectedly got a 1.28 rating with 41 kills.

So the next Upper Bracket match will be held between Astralis and fnatic. Both teams obviously want to win in order to get closer to the Grand Finals. But the Danes have a much better chance, as their star players have been firing on all cylinders all throughout the tournament.

CAN BIG MAKE THE JUMP INTO THE UPPER BRACKET FINALS?

BIG have put up a great show so far. But now it’s getting increasingly obvious that FaZe just haven’t been the same and G2 Esports are struggling as well. BIG’s past victories really aren’t any indicator for how well they will fare versus Vitality. Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut is on fire. With a 1.47 rating, he sits on top of the player rankings for this event. So the individual display of the BIG players might just not be enough to compete. Johannes “tabseN” Wodarz in particular has experienced massive dips in form. Should they still win their match versus Vitality, Astralis will likely await them next. So it’s definitely not getting any easier for them.

SPROUT FACING HEROIC

The sproutlings haven’t had the best of luck with the playoffs pairings. There are quite a few teams they could legitimately beat as favorites. But Heroic are one special roster. Even though they have lost their last encounter with G2, Casper “cadiaN” Möller is in top form and has shown a side of him that we have been missing for years now. He got 97 phenomenal kills in the hard-fought Best-of-Three versus Astralis, setting him on top of every other player on the server by quite a stretch. Now, René “TeSeS” Madsen has managed to impress with his performance against North as well.

So these are the kinds of players that Sprout will have to put up with. It remains to be seen whether cadiaN can actually hold up this level. Still, Josef “faveN” Baumann and company shouldn’t set their hopes too high for this one.

WHAT ARE FAZE’S CHANCES?

The superstar clan has unfortunately failed to deliver a super performance. Nikola “NiKo” Kovač and his men struggled all throughout the Group Stage and have entered playoffs from the Lower Bracket. There, they will already face a tough opponent in the form of the Ninjas in Pyjamas, but the remaining contestants pose a much bigger challenge. Should they win over NiP, they will meet either OG or G2 Esports next. Mateusz “mantuu” Wilczewski and his colleagues will be especially eager to get some revenge for IEM New York EU. Should FaZe still manage to win, they will have to contend with the likes of BIG or Vitality. Quite a few star-studded rosters are standing in their way and there are no second chances in the Lower Bracket.

WHO WILL MAKE IT TO THE GRAND FINALS?

The redemption of a Lower Bracket team is looking increasingly unlikely. The strong performances out of Astralis, fnatic, Vitality and BIG more or less guarantee that we will see two of these teams duke it out for the trophy. Today, we will get a glimpse at fnatic’s prowess going up versus Astralis. Tomorrow, we will see BIG and Vitality clash.
