Damian “daps” Steele has moved quickly to find another role following his retirement from VALORANT. The Canadian has returned to Counter-Strike in order to take up a coaching role with Evil Geniuses, with the move having been announced on June 21. The 27-year-old becomes one of the few pros to have switched from VALORANT back to CS:GO, with daps having previously worked as a coach for NRG Esports in 2017.

Daps announced his retirement from VALORANT just two weeks ago, having played for NRG since October last year. He will join Evil Geniuses following the departure of Brazilian favorite Wilton “zews” Prado, who departed the organization at the beginning of the month. Daps will be known to many at Evil Geniuses, with the veteran having been the team’s in-game leader for two years.

How daps made his name with Evil Geniuses

With Evil Geniuses, daps played alongside Vincent “Brehze” Cayonte and Tsvetelin “CeRq” Dimitrov, both of whom are still with the team today. Daps was ultimately replaced by ex-Complexity Gaming and OpTic Gaming’s Peter “Stanislaw” Jarguz. Daps moved to Cloud9 following his departure from EG, before switching to Gen.G for 2020. With his contract having not been renewed in September last year, daps decided to join a large number of fellow CS:GO pros in joining the VALORANT revolution.

Daps, who is of Argentine descent, will now return to coaching, as he looks to guide Evil Geniuses to success. It will be interesting to see how daps deals with working with two former teammates, as well as the player who took his spot a few years ago. He will also work with youngster Owen “oBo” Schlatter and former Team Envy fragger Michal “MICHU” Muller, who make up the remainder of the Evil Geniuses CS:GO lineup.

Can daps help Evil Geniuses in rediscovering their best form?

Evil Geniuses used to be a regular challenger at leading events. However, a host of roster changes mean that they have struggled to rediscover their best form. The decision to bench “Ethan” and “Tarik” remains a questionable one. Daps will have his work cut out as a result, with the veteran set to make his coaching debut for EG at the IEM Cologne play-in stage, which gets underway at the beginning of next month.
