The Counter-Strike 2 competition at the Esports World Cup 2026 has begun, bringing 32 teams together for one of the biggest international CS2 tournaments of the summer.
From August 12 to 23, established contenders including Team Vitality, Team Spirit, Falcons, FURIA, MOUZ and NAVI will compete for a share of the $2 million prize pool. The MongolZ return as defending champions after defeating Aurora in the previous edition.
With four groups, a double-elimination opening stage and 16 playoff places available, the tournament gives teams some room to recover from an early setback. However, the first matches use a best-of-one format, making the opening round particularly unpredictable.
32 teams enter four groups
The main event divides its 32 participants into four groups of eight.
Each group uses a double-elimination format. The opening matches are played as best-of-one series before the tournament switches to best-of-three matches for the remainder of the group stage.
Four teams from each group advance, creating a 16-team playoff bracket.
Group A begins with:

- Luminosity vs. GamerLegion
- Team Spirit vs. JiJieHao
- G2 Esports vs. M80
Group B features another set of major organizations:
- Team Falcons vs. K27
- Ninjas in Pyjamas vs. Legacy
- BetBoom Team vs. FaZe Clan
- MIBR vs. Astralis
The best-of-one opening round creates an immediate danger for favorites. A single strong map from an underdog can push a major contender into the lower bracket before the longer series even begin.
Vitality faces 100 Thieves in Group C
Team Vitality enters the tournament as one of the teams expected to challenge for the trophy.
The European roster of apEX, ZywOo, flameZ, mezii and ropz opens its campaign against 100 Thieves in Group C. That section also includes MOUZ, Lynn Vision, PARIVISION, B8, FUT Esports and TYLOO.
Vitality’s form will be closely watched after a dominant competitive period established the organization as one of the defining CS2 teams of the current era.

MOUZ begins against Lynn Vision later in the day, giving Group C two of the tournament’s most recognizable European contenders.
For Vitality, the EWC represents another opportunity to prove that its championship-level ceiling remains intact against a field packed with international challengers.
The MongolZ return as defending champions
Group D contains the team everyone is attempting to dethrone.
The MongolZ won the previous EWC Counter-Strike title after beating Aurora in the final. The organization returns in 2026 with a modified roster featuring bLitz, Techno4K, 910, Tikuak and DarkMeister.
Its opening opponent is magic.
The group also contains several dangerous teams, including FURIA, NAVI, 3DMAX, paiN Gaming, 9z and Wildcard.
Defending an international CS2 title is difficult under any format, and the expanded field makes the task even harder. The MongolZ can no longer rely on simply reproducing their previous run. They must navigate a different bracket against several teams capable of winning the entire event.
Falcons and Spirit remain major threats
Falcons enter the tournament with one of the most star-heavy rosters in Counter-Strike.
NiKo and m0NESY are joined by TeSeS, kyousuke and karrigan, giving the organization considerable individual firepower and experience. Their first test comes against K27 in Group B.
Team Spirit begins in Group A against JiJieHao. With donk and sh1ro still providing elite firepower, Spirit remains another obvious championship candidate.
The scale of the tournament means neither team has an easy route. FaZe, Astralis, Aurora, FURIA, NAVI, G2 and MOUZ are among the organizations capable of punishing mistakes during the group stage.
$600,000 goes to the EWC champion
The Counter-Strike tournament offers $2 million in total prize money, significantly increasing the financial stakes of a deep run.
The champion will receive $600,000 and 1,000 points toward the Esports World Cup Club Championship. Second place earns $340,000 and 750 points, while third receives $190,000 and 500 points.
The playoffs begin after the group stage and switch to single elimination. Matches remain best-of-three until the grand final, which will use a best-of-five format.
That structure makes the tournament increasingly unforgiving. Teams can recover from losses during the opening phase, but one bad playoff series ends the campaign.
Assessment
The CS2 Esports World Cup 2026 has the depth to become one of the most competitive tournaments of the season.
The MongolZ have the defending champion storyline, but the field around them is considerably more important than any single favorite. Vitality, Spirit, Falcons, FURIA and MOUZ all have realistic paths toward the trophy, while established names such as NAVI, FaZe, Astralis and G2 add further uncertainty.
The best-of-one opening matches could also create early surprises before the more traditional best-of-three series take over.
With $600,000 and valuable Club Championship points available to the winner, results in Paris matter both for individual CS2 rosters and for organizations competing across the wider Esports World Cup.
