fragster Ahsan Kabir 15. November 2025

Field Upgrades are a necessity for Zombies mode. Field Upgrades bring methods to train hordes, survive, or support other players. In Black Ops 7 Zombies, Treyarch has confirmed there are six Field Upgrades, one new and five returning. In this article, we are going to run down each one confirmed, what it does and how you could approach them in your strategies.

Confirmed Field Upgrades in BO7 Zombies

According to Call of Duty’s official blog, there are six field upgrades for Black Ops 7 Zombies: Toxic Growth, Dark Flare, Healing Aura, Frenzied Guard, Energy Mine and Aether Shroud. Here is a deeper explanation of all of these field upgrades:

1. Toxic Growth

Toxic Growth

Unlocked at: Player Level 29.

Effect: This creates a patch of thorny vines in front of the player. Enemies who pass through it are slowed by the vines and take toxic damage while moving through it.

Strategic Role: This acts as a defensive barrier, which excels at blocking chokepoints and delaying hordes.

Team-Safe: The vine does not harm your teammates, so it can be used in co-op without risking teammate damage.

Augments: There are twelve augments, and some notable augments include:

  • Urticant: creates a larger growth and enemies are slowed even after exiting.
  • Cordyception: the first enemy enters the growth is charmed and starts fighting neighbors and other enemies.
  • Pollination: killed enemies expel toxic damage and slow others.
  • Zoochory: the first enemy that enters the growth becomes part of the growth.
  • “Lesser” augments include Ankle Shredder (slows enemies), Green Thumb (more health for the growth), Extra Charge, and Plant Food (a chance to remove healing fruit).

2. Dark Flare

Unlocked at: Right away (i.e., no level requirement based on launch information).

Effect: Shoots a beam of energy that deals Shadow damage and penetrates multiple zombies.

Strategic role: Useful for high-damage burst in thinning out lines of zombies or damaging higher value targets.

Augments:

  • Extension: Increases duration of Dark Flare.
  • Supernova: Transforms the beam into a moving sphere that explodes at the end.
  • Dark Pact: The beam can heal and revive players on impact.
  • Muzzle Blast: The beam has extra damage in a cone.
  • Minor augments: Broad beam (wider beam), Heavy Gloom (slowing of enemies), Extra Charge, Dusk Flame (adds damage that is Shadow damage over time).

3. Healing Aura

Unlocked at: Player Level 17.

Effect: Summons energy beams that immediately restore health to fallen allies and heal teammates to full health.

Strategic role: Very useful in co-op. If you are caught in a tight spot, you can use this ability to revive dead players and instantly restore health.

Augments:

  • Necromancer: Healing Aura will now revive dead allies.
  • Stoic Presence: Upon activation, it stuns special or elite zombies and knocks down regular zombies.
  • Other augments include: Resilience (healing rate is faster), Enduring Radiance (beam effect lasts), Persistence (revived player retains perks), Inner Strength, Protection, and Cornucopia.

Unlocked at: Player Level 8.

Effect: Fully restores your armor and draws the attention of zombies. While active, only your armor takes damage, and kills help to repair the armor.

Strategic role: Very strong for clutch moments, you can absorb damage, recover armor and tank wild hordes.

Augments:

  • Frenzy Fire: Use ammo directly out of stock so no reloading while in guard mode.
  • Dual Layer: Increases your armor’s durability while you have Frenzied Guard active.
  • Other augments: Phalanx (your teammates also repair armor from kills), Retribution (explosion when activated), Fists of Frenzy (kill with fists), Repair Boost, Extension, Rally.

5. Energy Mine

Unlocked at: Immediately.

Effect: Deploys a mine of energy that detonates three times, damaging the area.

Strategic Role: Great for trap play or controlling space. You can place them in locations zombies want to go, and deny their path to that position.

Augments:

  • Smart Mine: The mine will get multiple detonations out of its fire and will wait until multiple enemies are nearby before exploding.
  • Frequency Boost: Extends how many times it detonates and for how long the mine is active.
  • Other Augments: Scatter (mine splits into three), Turret (mine becomes turret), Carousel (mines float), Extra charge, Siren (attracts zombies), and Recycle (recover mine for charge).

6. Aether Shroud

Unlocks at: Player Level 48.

Effect: Transports you to the Dark Aether briefly rendering you invisible to zombies.

Use: Used to escape danger, help reposition, or revive teammates with fewer zombies.

Augments:

  • Group Shroud: Cloaks your nearby teammates as well.
  • Burst Dash: Warps short distance ahead. Normal zombies in your path die instantly.
  • Void Sheath: Your melee weapon gains Dark Aether energy. Killing zombies in the shroud allows for a longer duration of the shroud.
  • Afterimage: Creates a Dark Aether clone to distract enemies.
  • Minor augments: Instant Reload (when activated it reloads), Extra Charge, Extension (more time), Impulse (Shadow damage and increases speed).

Conclusion

In Black Ops 7 Zombies, things have been balanced out perfectly by Treyarch. These confirmed upgrades will likely dictate how everyone plays BO7 Zombies, whether it be holding ground, rushing, supporting others, or making risky escapes. As more players play with, we’ll most likely see how the combinations develop as a “meta” for endgame or high-round runs.
