In a stunning upset, the North Americans of Chaos defeated FURIA over the course of two maps. 100 Thieves struggled against Gen.G, but eventually, the Australians came out on top. They two winning sides of Group A will fight for a playoffs spot tomorrow.

CHAOS 2-0 FURIA

Well, we didn’t see that one coming. The same match – really, the exact same maps – took place just a few days ago in the DreamHack Summer Open playoffs bracket. There, the Brazilians dispatched of Chaos with relative ease. Perhaps this is the reason as to why they decided to go for the same map pool at ESL One Cologne. It appears, however, as though Chaos had anticipated that move. Obviously, the team has prepared on Nuke and Inferno. Yesterday, they reversed their fortunes against FURIA.

On Nuke, Chaos got off to a good start. They tied the half at 8-7 on the T side, which is a great achievement on this map. As they entered the CT side, they were at a huge advantage. They also perfectly knew how to counter FURIA’s moves, keeping a tight lid on the sites. Chaos eventually overcame the Brazilians on a 16-11 scoreline. Going to Mirage next, FURIA must have felt nervous. They had obviously not anticipated to face such opposition on the first map. Winning against Chaos would require a lot more effort than they had hoped.

There, Henrique “HEN1” Teles did his best to keep his team alive in the Best-of-Three. With 35 kills on record, he was the top performer on his team. Unfortunately, Nathan “leaf” Orf was similarly successful on the Chaos side. The two made it an incredibly tense and narrow affair. To no surprise, the teams ended up in overtime. There, Chaos got enough rounds to make it a 22-19 win for themselves.

100T 2-1 GEN.G

At cs_summit 6, these two teams last met. In a close affair, Gen.G got the better of the Thieves, but that was over a month ago. Since then, the players have had a lengthy break and enjoyed some time to rest. It appears as though Gen.G have rested a bit more than 100T, as they weren’t completely present in their match at ESL One Cologne.

Letting 100 Thieves ramp up a big lead on the T side of Vertigo, Gen.G were unable to bring it back in the second half. Justin “jks” Savage in particular excelled in the fragging department, getting 29 kills total. With a 16-13 win, his team got the map lead going into Nuke. There, Kenneth “koosta” Suen held Gen.G in the match. Dominating on the T side, the team had very little effort to bring the map home in the second half with 16-11. On Inferno, however, 100 Thieves repeated their Vertigo performance, This time, Joakim “jkaem” Myrbostad took the lead and helped his team over the finishing line. With Tim “autimatic” Ta unable to post the big kills necessary for his team, Gen.G conceded the map on a 13-16 scoreline once again.

This means that the Winners’ and Losers’ Matches of Group A are set. Before those can commence, however, we will first see Group B in action today. Cloud9, Evil Geniuses, Team Liquid, and Triumph will be looking to get a head start on their way to the ESL One Cologne North America playoffs.
