Infinity Ward and Activision have released the first details about the upcoming Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. The most important innovations include a new AI faction that will be present in the matches and a new zone mechanic.

Warzone 2.0. will remain a free-to-play game and it is set to be an “all new experience” built from the scratch specifically for the new systems in the new Modern Warfare 2 engine. The title is set to be released on November 16, following the release of Modern Warfare 2 scheduled for October 28. The Gulag is also being redesigned, with players fighting for one last chance at victory.

New function

Rather than returning to Caldera, Warzone 2.0 will be set on the Al Mazrah desert map, in a fictional region of western Asia. The map will feature a number of well-known locations that will be, for the first time, inhabited by an AI faction. The developers hope that adding PvE elements to Warzone will make the world of Al Mazrah more vibrant, saying that it should create more realistic combat scenarios.

Other changes concern the zone mechanics, which will now consist of several circles. While it hasn’t been clarified how this works, the mechanic change is intended to shake up the endgame a bit. At launch, the game will feature two modes: classic battle royale and DMZ, described as a “new sandbox experience”. Meanwhile, it’s not yet clear whether Warzone will get a mode similar to Rebirth.

Gulag 2.0 as 2v2 battle

Gulag, the respawn mechanic that Warzone is known for, will return in Warzone 2.0, but in a slightly different form. Instead of 1v1, Gulag 2.0 transitions to 2v2, and also lets players to fight The Jailer. Players don’t get a weapon right away but have to find one in the Gulag.

It is not yet known if previous versions of the Gulag Arena will return. Previous arenas have included classic CoD cards like Hijacked and Standoff, among others.

Warzone 2.0 will launch for console and PC, but the game’s mobile version is also in the plans. This is a Battle Royale for iOS and Android with 120 players, which is set to be released in 2023. Before the revised version is released for consoles and PC, you can get a first impression of the gameplay of Modern Warfare 2 in the Open Beta, which starts on September 16, 2022. Unfortunately, there is no indication of a Warzone beta yet, so we will have to be patient.
