Call of Duty 2023 will be a new game with content from MW2

According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Activision’s current plan for Call of Duty 2023 is a new standalone game featuring content from Modern Warfare 2.

New installments of Call of Duty tend to leave behind the theme of the previous game. For example, we enjoyed Modern Warfare 2 in 2022, but Vanguard the year before. In addition, Black Ops Cold War debuted in 2020. But none of the stories in the games connect with each other.

However, since Activision said last summer that new premium content would be coming to the game in 2023, there has been a lot of confusion surrounding this year’s Call of Duty release.

However, it was unclear at the time whether 2023’s Call of Duty would be a new game or something else. In addition, according to a news story that surfaced in November, Activision was supposedly working on a sizable paid DLC for Modern Warfare 2 for later this year. But now it looks like plans have changed.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says that CoD for 2023 was initially going to be a paid update to MW2. However, it seems that things are changing, and it will now be advertised and sold separately, although it will also be an add-on for MW2.

According to Schreier, the new game would have some new features. Players can enjoy a new campaign, but all current multiplayer maps and gameplay styles will be retained. Therefore, Activision will not promote it as DLC but as a full-priced premium installment.

Call of Duty 2023 will be available during the fall if all goes according to plan, fulfilling the franchise’s regular release season. Mind you; its name is unknown for now. However, the new Modern Warfare 2 game will likely carry a subtitle to differentiate it from the previous title.

Another exciting issue we can comment on is that, unlike Modern Warfare 2, the expansion’s development is not handled by Infinity Ward but by Sledgehammer Games.

This sudden change of strategy, of course, has caught the studio’s employees by surprise. Their goal, at first, was to create downloadable content. But the project morphed into a full title with the same deadline for completion.

According to Schreier, Sledgehammer Games had a similar issue while creating Call of Duty: Vanguard. They lacked time to realize their plans, and the outcome was already known. As a result, Vanguard did not meet expectations, even in sales.

We will have to wait if this new work rises several steps in quality; since the Modern Warfare saga is by far the most beloved by fans and prized by Activision in the economic field.

On the other hand, it will be interesting to see the reaction of the players when the expansion of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is presented. Now that we all know that it was initially a DLC.
