wo of the best international CSGO teams have made roster changes. Mousesports have acquired a young talent from FaZe Clan to serve as their sixth man, while FaZe have filled their newly vacant slot with a 2017 Major winner.

2020 has been a rough year for many teams in the Counter-Strike space. We have witnessed the sharp decline of Astralis and the temporary departure of two core members. BIG have risen to the top in unprecedented fashion and Liquid have removed their longest-standing member in favor of a young gunner. After the summer break, two international top teams have nw come back with some impactful roster changes.

PUTTING TRUST IN KJAERBYE

Markus “Kjaerbye” Kjærbye hasn’t had the best year so far. Actually, he has been fighting a downward trend ever since his departure from Astralis, where he served in 2017. Under the Danish organization, he won a Major trophy and was cronwed MVP of the event as well. However, the pressure got to the young player and he ended up leaving the team in early 2018. Most recently, he has been competing under the North banner. While his performance has been quite steady in recent months, he has been nowhere near his Major-winning display for a while now.

For twoof their recent roster additions, FaZe Clan have stuck to signing relatively young and unknown players. In the case of Helvijs “broky” Saukants, this has worked out well. The Latvian player had his first professional experience only 7 months before joining the FaZe lineup. However, they missed the mark with Aurimas “Bymas” Pipiras. When they signed the player as a stand-in in May of 2020, they attempted to find a replacement for Olof “olofmeister” Kajbjer. Not having any clue as to when the Swede would return from his hiatus, they hesitated on signing another established and expensive player. For that reason, they took a chance on young Bymas, hoping to mold him into a similarly strong player as broky. Unfortunately, their experiment has been unsuccessful. The 16-year-old Lithuanian has been performing well below the expectations of the team.

BYMAS GETTING A SECOND CHANCE

He now joins mousesports, who have had incredible success with the development of Robin “ropz” Kool. The Estonian had made himself known through Faceit Pro League with just 17 years of age. There, he showed immense individual talent and mousesports took a chance on him. They hoped to be able to turn him into a great team player. And they absolutely did, as ropz is now one of the centerpieces of the mousesports lineup. With David “frozen” Čerňanský, they have developed yet another young talent. In this case, however, frozen had been around the professional scene for much longer.

Making way for Bymas is actually, well… no one. The German organization is walking in the footsteps of Astralis, as they are trying to turn their roster into a six-man lineup. Their philosophy of developing new players will be put to the test, as FaZe have arguably failed in turning Bymas into a valuable part of their roster. They have also not yet commented on how the 6-man team will manifest in their upcoming leagues and events. Will Bymas trade places with one specific player? Will they develop a rotating scheme for other players to take breaks? Mousesports will probably release a statement on this sometime in the future.

FaZe have waited patiently for Kjaerbye’s contract with North to expire, which means that they haven’t had to move any huge sums for the new player. But he will probably not have entered into a contract which might see him exiting the team anytime soon, so it appears as though olofmeister is out of FaZe’s active roster for good.

Both teams will debut their refreshed lineups during ESL One Cologne Europe. There, we will probably get some answers on how mousesports approach their extended team. We will also see whether Kjaerbye will get back into shape in the FaZe roster. Considering his past, we can only image what he might be capable of, should he find his old form.
