Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has apologized for his earlier comments about a possible $90 price tag for the upcoming Borderlands 4.

On social media, someone recently asked Pitchford not to price Borderlands 4 at $80, or €90. Pitchford responded by saying that he is not the one making that decision. “If you’re a true fan, you’ll find a way to buy the game. My local game store sold Starflight for the Sega Mega Drive for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school and working for minimum wage at an ice cream parlor, and I managed to buy the game.” He then linked to a video interview in which he reiterated that a higher price for games may be necessary.

Pitchford’s quotes caused quite a stir among fans. Pitchford has since apologized on social media. In a long, unparagraphed post on X, he said, among other things: “I’m sorry that a misunderstanding has arisen. The absolute truth is that I don’t want anyone to pay more than is necessary or comfortable, and I always work with the intention and hope that consumers feel they’ve gotten a good deal, whatever they pay.”

He continued: “I just wanted to explain that the price is not up to me, but that if there is a $10 price increase (since the industry is clearly going that way), it will be fine and Borderlands 4 will do well because it is going to be a great game and there are many fans who value it.”

Later in his apology, he tries to leave no room for misunderstanding: “As an artist, I don’t want prices to go up because I want everyone to have access to what we create. I understand that business has to be done and that the market and the economy push prices up. Sooner or later, we all have to adapt so that we can earn at least as much as we spend, so that we can continue to deliver great content. Either way, I want to entertain people and my priority is to deliver fun and creativity.”

An official price for Borderlands 4 is not yet known at the time of writing. The game will feature the cel-shaded graphics of its predecessors. The range of loot will also be more extensive than ever. The game will once again be playable solo and in co-op for four players, and will feature plenty of firefights, world exploration, and an “eclectic cast of old and new unforgettable characters.”

It was recently announced that the game will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC a little earlier than expected, on September 12. A Nintendo Switch 2 release is still planned for later this year at the time of writing. Here’s everything we know about Borderlands 4.
