Beast of Reincarnation launches on August 4, 2026, bringing Game Freak’s new action RPG to Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5. The title will also be available through Game Pass from day one and supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Instead of following the familiar Pokémon formula, the developer is introducing a darker single-player adventure built around sword combat, tactical commands and the bond between a warrior and her canine companion.
Game Freak Moves Beyond Pokémon
Game Freak is best known for developing the mainline Pokémon games, but Beast of Reincarnation represents a major change in direction. The new project is a large-scale action RPG with a post-apocalyptic setting, demanding encounters and a more realistic visual style.
The story takes place in Japan in the year 4026. Humanity is disappearing as a mysterious corruption spreads across the country and transforms the environment. Players control Emma, an outcast infected by the same blight she is fighting. She travels alongside Koo, a loyal dog who plays an active role in exploration and combat.
Their objective is to reach the capital and destroy the Beast of Reincarnation, which appears to be the source of the spreading corruption. The journey leads through ruined cities, hostile wastelands and forests that suddenly emerge from the landscape.
The central features include:
- A single-player action RPG set in a ruined futuristic Japan
- Real-time sword combat combined with tactical commands for Koo
- Boss battles that unlock new powers for the two protagonists
Beast of Reincarnation is one of Game Freak’s clearest attempts to establish a major identity outside the Pokémon franchise.
Real-Time Combat Meets Tactical Commands
The combat system combines two different RPG approaches. Players directly control Emma during fights, using sword attacks, defensive moves and positioning in real time. At the same time, they can give Koo commands that function more like abilities in a command-based RPG.
This structure is designed to make Emma and Koo operate as one combat unit rather than as a traditional protagonist and passive companion. Koo can perform techniques that support Emma, create openings or help the pair deal with powerful enemies.
Xbox describes the combat as demanding and technical. Players will need to study enemy patterns and combine both characters’ abilities instead of relying only on basic attacks. Bosses are particularly important because defeating them allows Emma and Koo to capture powers required for the wider journey.

Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere Confirmed
Beast of Reincarnation will enter Game Pass on release day. Subscribers can therefore access the game without purchasing it separately, depending on their active plan and platform.
The title also supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Players who buy the digital Xbox version can access it on both an Xbox console and a Windows PC without paying for another copy. Microsoft also lists support for compatible Windows-based handheld systems.
The main Xbox benefits are:
- Day-one access through Game Pass
- One digital purchase for Xbox and Windows PC
- Support for compatible handheld gaming devices
These features could give the new IP a larger opening audience. Original games often face a difficult launch because players do not already know their worlds, characters or combat systems. Game Pass lowers that barrier and may persuade subscribers to try a title they would otherwise wait to buy.
Pre-Order and Deluxe Edition Bonuses
Players who pre-order the standard edition receive a brown Shiba skin for Koo and 30,000 Amber, the game’s internal currency.
The Digital Deluxe Edition includes additional cosmetic and progression-related items. The package contains black and brown Shiba skins for Koo, an Oni’s Hat for Emma, the Big Dipper sword, 100,000 Amber and several vegetable seedlings.
The official store description does not fully explain the importance of Amber or the seedlings within the progression system. Players should therefore not assume that the Deluxe Edition is required for a normal playthrough.
A Story Built Around Emma and Koo
Game Freak is placing the relationship between Emma and Koo at the centre of the experience. Their bond becomes stronger as they move deeper into the corrupted world and obtain new abilities.
The official description also indicates that major characters are hiding important secrets. Emma is already connected to the central threat through her condition, while Koo’s full role in the story remains unclear.
This gives the game a more character-driven structure than its large monsters and ruined environments initially suggest. The story is not only about defeating the Beast. It will also explore what the journey reveals about Emma, Koo and the remaining human population.
Assessment
Beast of Reincarnation is an important release for Game Freak because it tests whether the studio can build a major action RPG identity beyond Pokémon. Its post-apocalyptic world, technical combat and dual-character system immediately separate it from the developer’s best-known franchise.
Game Pass should help the title attract attention at launch, while Xbox Play Anywhere offers additional flexibility for console and PC players. The main question is whether the combat between Emma and Koo remains varied and engaging across the entire campaign.
If the boss design, progression systems and story deliver on the official presentation, Beast of Reincarnation could become more than an experimental side project. It may establish a new long-term franchise for Game Freak while showing that the studio can succeed outside its traditional formula.
