Assassin’s Creed: First Set Video From Netflix Series Shows Ancient Rome

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed series from Netflix has apparently produced its first piece of leaked footage. A clip lasting around 27 seconds shows a ruined hall with massive columns, debris and a stone throne featuring the familiar symbol of the Assassins.

No characters, costumes or actual story scenes can be seen in the video. Even so, the leak provides an early impression of the visual style Netflix and Ubisoft may be pursuing for the live-action adaptation. The Roman architecture is particularly noticeable and fits the already confirmed historical direction of the series.

Leaked Clip Shows a Ruined Hall

The video was reportedly first posted on TikTok before being shared more widely on X. It shows a member of the production team walking through an elaborately constructed set of ruins. Large columns, scattered pieces of stone and the central throne create the impression of a destroyed temple or royal chamber.

The most important detail can be seen directly on the throne: the Assassin’s Creed logo is clearly carved into the stone. This immediately connects the location to the game series without revealing any characters or specific story elements.

Other outlets also picked up the leak within the past 24 hours. GamePro described the footage as the first video from the set and referred to filming at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome. German reports from Play3 and PlayCentral also linked the location to ancient Rome.

What the Leak Actually Reveals

The short clip provides only limited information. It confirms neither specific roles nor locations within the story. Nevertheless, a few cautious conclusions can be drawn:

• The series appears to be using large physical sets instead of relying entirely on digital backgrounds.
• The Assassins’ symbol is intended to be clearly visible and integrated into the world.
• The Roman architecture matches the official information about the historical setting.

It remains unclear what purpose the room serves in the series. It could be a hideout, a temple or the location of a larger confrontation. There is currently no confirmation of any of these possibilities.

Netflix had previously confirmed that the new series will tell an original story set in ancient Rome. Production is taking place in Italy. The cast includes Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, Toby Wallace and Noomi Rapace.

The series has been described as a thriller exploring the secret conflict between two factions. One side wants to shape the future of humanity through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. This brings the central conflict between Assassins and Templars from the games into the adaptation.

Netflix Is Developing a New Story

The series is not expected to be a direct adaptation of a single game. Instead, Netflix is developing a new storyline within the established Assassin’s Creed universe. This allows the production to use familiar elements such as the Assassin Brotherhood, the Templars and historical power struggles without being tied to the story of one existing protagonist.

Roberto Patino and David Wiener are serving as showrunners and executive producers. Patino previously worked on projects including Westworld and Sons of Anarchy, while Wiener was involved with the Halo television series. For Ubisoft Film & Television, Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill and Genevieve Jones are part of the production team.

The live-action series is also the first project in a wider collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft based on Assassin’s Creed. Earlier announcements suggested that additional animated adaptations were also being considered.

The 2016 Film Still Casts a Shadow

Assassin’s Creed was previously adapted into a feature film in 2016. Michael Fassbender played a modern-day protagonist who experienced the memories of an ancestor through the Animus. The new Netflix series is unrelated to that film and will be the first live-action television adaptation set within the game universe.

The series format could give the franchise more room to explore both the historical period and the conflict between Assassins and Templars in greater depth. However, a short recording of a set is not enough to judge whether Netflix will use that opportunity successfully.

Assessment: Strong Set Design, but Not Yet a Real Impression of the Series

The leaked footage is likely to attract attention from fans mainly because it provides the first indication of the production’s visual direction. The large columns, scattered ruins and the symbol carved into stone create a recognisable Assassin’s Creed atmosphere.

At the same time, the importance of the clip should not be overstated. It shows no actors, dialogue, fight scenes or use of the Animus. The recording also reveals little about the quality of the visual effects or the final direction.

It is encouraging that Netflix appears to be investing in a substantial physical set rather than presenting ancient Rome through generic digital backgrounds alone. The real test will come with official footage. Until then, the leak is an interesting sign of progress, but not proof that the Assassin’s Creed series will meet the expectations of fans.
