Apex Legends | Valkyrie Abilities Breakdown

fragster 27. April 2021

Valkyrie is the latest addition to the ever-growing Apex Legends roster and, by the looks of it, she’s going to pack a punch! So, as always, let’s do a breakdown of her abilities and theorize as to whether or not she has what it takes to leave an indelible mark on the game! (spoiler: she definitely does)

But before we get down to the nitty-gritty, make sure to watch the following announcement trailer. It not only sets the stage for what’s to come, but also gives us a fairly good look at Valkyrie in action!

Apex Legends | Valkyrie Abilities Breakdown

Tactical Ability: “Missile Swarm” — As the name suggest, Valkyrie can send out a swarm of miniature rockets. We’re talking 12 missiles in total being fired at the ground. These shots won’t deal a lot of damage, so they’ll mostly be used to disorient and stagger her enemies. Still, it’s a practical ability that should prove most useful!

Passive: “VTOL Jets” — Valkyrie can jump while in the air to active her jetpack and become airborne.

Ultimate: “Skyward Dive” — Valkyrie launches into the air and starts skydiving. Her teammates can then latch on for the ride. During this period, all enemies in view will become highlighted for both Valkyrie as well as her teammates. Think of her ultimate as a Jump Tower — albeit one you can bring with you wherever you go. A mighty powerful repositioning tool, and an ability packed with potential. We can only imagine the many creative use-case scenarios players will come up with, and we cannot wait to see it all in action!

This ability kit is perhaps a bit simple in nature (as in void of any bells and whistles), but it’s also obscenely powerful. Valkyrie can reach incredible heights (both metaphorically and literally) and therefore get the upper hand over her opponents. Scouting has never been this easy (and fun)!

She can’t fly all the time as her jetpack comes with limited fuel but it does refill over time. You’ll have to pick and choose which moments to ascend to the skies and when to traverse the map on foot. Being airborne, of course, is quite a nifty benefit which means Respawn had to be on point when it came to balancing.

A Fairly Balanced Ability

To make it a bit more fair to her opponents, her jetpack emits a lot of noise making her easily discernible regardless of how high she might ascend. Can she flank from the most incredible of angles? Absolutely, but it’ll never be a silent flank which, in short, is fair. Furthermore, it seems that she won’t be able to return fire (with her standard weapons) while flying. Still, her missiles will probably suffice in a pinch!

Closing Remarks

Respawn seems to have knocked it out of the park with Valkyrie — not only is she a wholly unique addition to Apex Legends, but her abilities are also every bit as interesting (and packed with potential) as we initially thought. All in all, we can’t wait for season nine to hit live servers — May 4th is the date, so mark your calendars!
