Intel has taken an advantage of the spotlight at CES 2023 — the major technology event held in Las Vegas, USA — to introduce its new generation of processors, specifically the 13th generation Intel Core chips with Raptor Lake for laptops.

Intel’s new family of processors features a hybrid essence that allows it to scale in performance and adapt to a wide range of scenarios. Intel Core i9-13980HX, the first 24-core processor, takes the leading position.

13th generation Intel Raptor Lake, in three series

Just like last year, Intel will offer its new chips in three series, namely H, P, and U. Each series has its own characteristics to operate in notebooks of different ranges, while one of the main parameters defining each series is the thermal design power (TDP).

Intel H series processors

The H series of Intel processors is the company’s most ambitious proposal. These chips will offer a frequency of up to 5.6 GHz. According to the manufacturer, they perform 49% faster than the previous generation.

As mentioned above, the processors could have up to 24 cores (8 performance cores, 16 efficiency cores) and 32 threads. At the same time, improvements are promised in Thread Director, the component in charge of processing each thread of execution.

This series will support the memory of up to 128 GB in total for DDR5 (up to 5600 MHz) and DDR4 (up to 3200 MHz). In terms of connectivity, it will benefit from Intel Killer Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+), Bluetooth LE, and Bluetooth 5.2.

The H processors will also support Thunderbolt 4, offering working speeds of up to 40 gigabits per second (Gbps). Furthermore, it improves the computer’s connectivity to multiple 4K monitors and accessories, such as the HX and HK models.

Intel P and U series processors

The P and U series are designed for lighter and thinner notebooks. These chips could have up to 14 cores (6 performance cores, eight efficiency cores).

Besides Thread Director improvements, these two series promise “broad support for DDR5, DDR4, and LP memory”, as well as Intel Wi-Fi 6E (Gig+) with new wireless features. It will also support up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports.

One of the novelties of this series is that, for the first time, it will feature the Intel Movidius vision processing unit.
