AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution Reportedly Coming In June

If the rumor mill is to be believed, AMD plans on releasing their DLSS equivalent “Fidelity FX Super Resolution” (or FSR for short) this June. That, in short, is quite a surprise, but fortunately it’s a positive one in nature. We knew it was coming at some point in the near future, but we didn’t have a concrete date to work with — AMD were pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing, for reasons beyond our understanding.

It’s no secret that NVIDIA’s DLSS is making big waves and is, in many ways, the future of gaming. It’s simply magical, and the fact that it’s becoming more and more prevalent means it’s slowly becoming a part of the mainstream. AMD, therefore, needs to offer an alternative in order to stay relevant.

AMD’s FSR will reportedly offer much of the same algorithmic super sampling like DLSS, but it’ll do so through software rather than hardware. On the one hand, this is definitely great news as it’ll easily be implemented by game developers and should also, in theory, work with NVIDIA graphics cards as well (and probably even Intel’s once they hit the market). On the other, given its software-based nature, it probably won’t deliver as impressive results as DLSS, although this is only just a (fairly logical) theory.

It still remains to be seen how well AMD’s Fidelity FX Super Resolution will work and whether it’ll be potent enough to compete with DLSS on even footing.

AMD FSR | Potentially A Big Deal

This exciting new feature will first only be available on PCs, but it’s bound to “trickle down” to consoles as well as some point. Moreover, AMD is supposedly already working with game developers on how to best implement FSR going forward.

All in all, this is definitely an exciting moment for gamers and those who are especially partial to “team red” and their products. NVIDIA’s DLSS was also fairly mediocre (to put it mildly) back when it was first released, so don’t expect any miracles; otherwise you’re bound to be disappointed.

Still, in true AMD fashion, they’ll probably deliver on their promise further down the line (after they’ve had ample time to polish things up). Either way, super sampling is the future of gaming, and having it available on all platforms is definitely the way to go!
