T1 is one powerhouse of a team worthy of being cemented in the hall of fame. Their gaming skills that won them back-to-back world championships created their legendary feat of holding the record as the longest reigning champions in the history of League of Legends.

T1’s very first team lineup and consisted of Reapered, H0R0, MighTiLy, UandMe, and StarLast. They made their tournament debut back in 2012 at the IEM Cologne, making a powerful impression of their team with their 2-1 win over Fnatic. This breakthrough set the tone for T1’s future achievements.

The Merging of a Legendary Team

Formerly called SK Telecom T1 or SKT before rebranding as T1 in 2019, the South Korean esports team was once divided into two, namely: SK Telecom T1 K and SK Telecom T1 S. In 2015, the unified T1 team proved to be a top challenger for the year’s tournaments.

This so-called SKT T1 Dynasty is a lineup with Faker, Easymoon, MaRin, Bengi, T0M, Bang, Wolf, and Piccaboo. They won the LCK 2015 Spring Split against GE Tigers with a dominant sweep of 3-0. However, they lost to EDward Gaming placing them second at the Mid-Season Invitational 2015.

The LCK 2015 Summer Split became another ground for T1 to showcase their formidable strength, placing 1st after their sweep victory against KT Rolster. The team then followed it up strongly by winning the 2015 World Championship against their rematch with KOO Tigers. The last tournament of 2015 that they participated in was the KeSPA Cup where they placed 3rd – 4th.

Longest Reigning Champion

The achievements that T1 made in 2016 was perhaps their greatest record. Clinching the championship title for two consecutive World Championships, the team set the record for the longest reign as champions in League of Legends.

In 2016, the team was awarded the following achievements:

  • 1st place in IEM Season X – World Cup
  • 1st place in LCK Spring 2016
  • 1st place in Mid-Season Invitational 2016
  • 3rd place in LCK Summer 2016
  • 1st place in 2016 World Championship
  • 3rd-4th place in KeSPA Cup 2016.

T1 continued to be a powerhouse in the 2017 tournaments winning the championships for LCK Spring and Mid-Season Invitational in a row. However, fans were met with disappointment when T1’s win streak was upset by Longzhu Gaming in the LCK Summer 2017, which landed the team in 2nd place. They suffered another defeat at the 2017 World Championships grand finals, again placing 2nd. Their last tournament of the year was the KeSPA Cup 2017 where they got 3rd-4th place.

From 2018-2021, SKT T1 made constant changes with their rosters—a struggle to find the right combinations of talents in hopes to elevate the team to a higher level.

For the LCK Spring 2018, T1 added Untara and Blank as starting players, placing them 4th. At the LCK Summer 2018, Thal replaced Untara, Effort took Wolf’s place, and Pirean joined as a sub midlaner—they placed 7th, 4th at the LCK Regional Finals 2018, and 5th-8th at the KeSPA Cup 2018.

2019 saw more changes in the team’s lineup—Khan as toplaner, Clid jungler, Mata, and Teddy as new AD Carry. They placed 1st at the LCK Spring 2019, 3rd-4th for MSI 2019, 1st at LCK Summer 2019, and 3rd-4th for 2019 World Championship.

T1 then won the LCK Regional Finals 2021 but placed 3rd-4th at the 2021 World Championship. SKT then released Canna, Ellim, Cuzz, Clozer, Holt, and Teddy.

During the dark times of T1, the lineup consisting of Zeus, Oner, Faker, Gumayusi, and Keria was created, this roster became the one that led T1 to reclaim their throne as League of Legends champion. From 2022-2024, the team played consistently well—1st place at LCK Spring 2022, 2nd for MSI 2022, LCK Summer 2022, and 2022 World Championship.

Their redemption showed its true form during 2023 where they managed to win 2nd for LCK Spring and Summer 2023, and 3rd for MSI 2023—with their ticket to the Worlds 2023 at hand, they finally took back what’s rightfully theirs and won the 2023 World CHampionship.

T1’s ZOFGK is still going strong in this year’s recent tournaments. They got 2nd at LCK Spring 2024, 3rd at MSI 2024, and victoriously claimed the EWC 2024 title against Top Esports.

T1 went far beyond any other team has gotten, accomplishing so many feats worthy of being called legendary. The ability to scout so many talented players is what made T1 the team among teams, from well-rounded individuals to a super rookie that is few years ahead with his gaming sense.

Although the team went through its own ups and downs and suffered defeats due to experimenting with their rosters, their resilience proved impressive. Like a callback to the iconic “Faker is forever!”, T1’s forms are temporary, but their unshakeable spirit seems embedded in permanence. Their 12-year career so far has seen legends come and go, but even as teams fall away, T1 and their legacy stays standing.
