Path of Exile 2 is already a dangerous game, especially for players brave enough to enter hardcore mode, where one death means the permanent end of a character. But even by action RPG standards, this one is absurd: one specific crab enemy briefly became one of the deadliest monsters in the game because of a bug.
A Hardcore Death With a Strange Explanation
The discovery came after Path of Exile streamer Zizaran lost a hardcore character in a seemingly normal combat encounter. At first, the death looked confusing and almost impossible to explain from the player’s perspective. Several days later, Grinding Gear Games revealed what had actually happened.
During an interview with the game’s lead developers, co-game director Jonathan Rogers explained that the team had looked into the death. The culprit was not a boss, a major elite enemy or a complicated endgame mechanic. It was a crab.
More precisely, it was a specific crab enemy capable of firing a volley of projectiles during its attack animation. Because of a bug, if the monster died while using that attack, all of those projectiles could land instantly in one place. For any player standing directly on top of the enemy, the result was instant death.
The Crab Somehow Became One of PoE 2’s Deadliest Monsters
Co-game director Mark Roberts explained that this was not just a rare funny edge case. According to him, that single crab enemy managed to reach the third highest player kill count in Path of Exile 2.
That is a ridiculous statistic, but it also makes sense when looking at where the enemy appears. The crab can show up during Remnant encounters in the current league, where groups of enemies spawn around the player in a circle. Since those encounters often force players into tight spaces and close-range combat, it becomes very easy to stand directly on top of an enemy when it dies.
In most situations, that would simply mean cleaning up a pack of monsters and collecting the reward. With this bugged crab, however, it could mean losing an entire hardcore character in a fraction of a second.
Grinding Gear Games Uses the Bug as a Balance Example
Rogers brought up the crab as part of a wider discussion about how bugs can distort the way players experience monster difficulty. Sometimes, an enemy appears to be overtuned or unfairly lethal when the real problem is a technical issue hidden inside one specific attack or interaction.
He also mentioned a previous case involving a spider enemy that was accidentally dealing an enormous amount of damage through an unintended projectile interaction. These are exactly the kinds of issues Grinding Gear Games is still working through while Path of Exile 2 continues development.
For hardcore players, that distinction matters a lot. A fair death can be frustrating, but at least it usually teaches the player something. A bugged enemy that instantly deletes a character without clear warning is much harder to accept.
Hardcore Players Are Still Taking the Biggest Risks
The story is also a reminder of what early access can mean for hardcore players. Path of Exile 2 is still unfinished, and while that gives Grinding Gear Games room to adjust systems, fix enemies and polish encounters, it also means players are sometimes exposed to problems that have not yet been fully ironed out.
For regular characters, a sudden death is annoying. For hardcore characters, it can erase hours or even days of progress. That makes bugs like this especially painful, even when the explanation is as bizarre as an overpowered crab.
The developers seem fully aware of that problem, and the crab has now become another example of why death clarity and monster tuning are so important in Path of Exile 2.
A Small Enemy With a Very Big Legacy
Path of Exile 2 has plenty of brutal bosses, elite monsters and chaotic league encounters, but for a brief moment, one crab accidentally climbed near the top of the game’s kill rankings.
It is funny, strange and slightly terrifying at the same time. For Zizaran and other hardcore players who got caught by it, the death was anything but a joke. For everyone else, it may go down as one of the most memorable bugs in the early life of Path of Exile 2.
Grinding Gear Games still has plenty of balance work ahead, but one thing is already clear: in Path of Exile 2, even a crab can become a nightmare if the math goes wrong.
