Summary:

  • Zombies in the PEAK’s Roots biome are infected scouts that awaken when approached.
  • The Zombies in PEAK can chase, lunge, and can infect players with spores, so staying alert is essential.
  • Players can avoid zombie infection by using Medicinal Roots or Antidote, using terrain to your advantage, and strategically planning climb routes to avoid ambushes.

In the new “Roots” biome update for PEAK, developers introduced a chilling twist to the gameplay, zombie‑infected scouts stalking the fungal forest. If you want to survive and succeed in this new biome update, it is crucial to learn how to face this kind of threat. Below, this guide will explain how the PEAK Roots biome zombies behave, how to avoid or deal with them, and what efficient strategies you can do.

The Zombies in PEAK and Their Location

Zombies in the Roots biome are former scouts infected by fungal spores. They spawn only in the Roots biome and not in other biomes.  Typically, you’ll encounter them in Level 2 of the Roots update, looking like ordinary scouts until they spring to life.

They act differently than normal enemies, which makes them a harder opponent than others. Interestingly, they can climb walls, jump, lock onto you, and they’ll pursue you even over vertical terrain.  When a zombie bites you, “Spores” meter beside your stamina bar will appear. If that fills and your stamina runs out, you will turn into a Zombie.

PEAK Roots Biome Zombies’ Attacks & What to Do

The zombies are not immediately noticeable, so you have to look carefully if you ever see NPCs or suspicious scouts. Here are their key behaviour traits and attacks:

  • They lie dormant on the ground until you approach too closely.
  • Once they spot you, they will trail and chase, climb surfaces, and attempt a lunge attack.
  • If they successfully bite you, a Spores meter appears next to your stamina bar. If the meter maxes out and your stamina is drained, you’ll “turn” or fail the run.

To avoid being infected and turning, you must carry a cure with you all the time. Several items in the Roots biome can remove the bite if used in time such as Medicinal Root, Mandrake, Cure-All or Antidote. When you use one of these correctly after getting bitten, you’ll stop the Spores meter, stay alive, and unlock the Undead Encounter Badge.

Strategies to Avoid & Survive Zombie Encounters

The run in the Roots biome is thrilling but a lot dangerous. Once you are bitten by PEAK Roots biome zombies and successfully turned into one, you will fail and have to repeat the run. Essentially, a smart strategy is needed to avoid repeats, so here are strategies you can use:

  • Stay alert in Level 2 onward, since that’s where zombies start appearing.
  • Avoid staying low on stamina, once your stamina drains, your chances of turning a double up.
  • Always carry a cure plant or status-clear item, since having one ready lessens the probability of failure.
  • Use terrain or obstacles to your advantage and delay the Zombies.
  • Don’t ignore infected allies, cure them as soon as possible.

In other cases, if you want to achieve the Undead Encounter Badge and cosmetic (Pumpkin Hat), then you must get bitten and cure yourself. The badges signify mastery of specific biome challenges and encourage you to explore deeper.
