The powerhouse in North America League of Legends succumbs to a disappointing loss against 100 Thieves. This result came out as a shock to the North American community, as they are consistent NA representatives. 

On September 2, 2024, 100 Thieves and Cloud 9 faced off in the semifinal match of the lower bracket in LCS Summer 2024. The four-round series ended 3-1 in favor of 100 Thieves to move on to the next tournament stage. Meanwhile, Cloud 9 finished in fourth place to miss a step in the World Championship. 

Cloud9’s Unbreakable Worlds Streak Comes to an End

It may be inevitable, but no one expected it would be soon enough. Since their establishment in 2013, Cloud 9 has been a consistent presence in the League of Legends World Championship. The beginning of the Summer Split placed them in a dangerous position as they faced a four-game losing streak in the group stage. Fortunately, the blow winds in favor of their fate by securing wins over Immortals and Shopify to make it to the playoffs. 

Their playoff run started in the best spirit as they took a sweep victory against Dignitas in the upper bracket quarterfinals. However, they immediately had to take a step back to the loser’s bracket as they fought against Team Liquid. What’s good for the team was they were able to bounce back on this and won 3-2 against Dignitas in a close-contented match. 

After defeating Cloud 9, their remaining task is to beat FlyQuest to move forward to the grand finals. Regardless of the result, they are now assured of a podium finish and at least $30,000. 

Cloud9’s Uncertain Future

There will be a lot to unpack in this loss of a powerhouse team. Despite the star-studded roster, the team failed to overcome their shortcomings in crucial moments. The absence of mid-game adjustments made them penetrable by the opponents since they failed to counter the plays. Now, the question lies on what would change in the upcoming competitions? 

Nevertheless, the loss resulted in their early exit from the tournament and secured the fourth-place finish in the LCS Summer 2024. While it was not their most impressive performance in years, it is still applaudable showmanship from the team.
